Cassandra Clare Talks With Bookish About Movie Adaptation

Bookish interviews Cassandra Clare. They talk about The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones adaptation and the cast.
Bookish: "The Mortal Instruments" has several more mature jokes and darker themes--a departure from a lot of YA, which keeps things fairly clean. How does that more mature sensibility translate to the movie?

Cassandra Clare: It's interesting, because you never know how something is going to be digitally realized until the director puts it on film. [The movie's] got a very dark sensibility--gritty urban fantasy, which I really like.

Bookish: Are there any scenes in particular you feel express that?

'The Bane Chronicles: Runaway Queen' Sneak-Peek From the Shadowhunter App

In February, the Shadowhunter App gave us the first chapter of The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Princess. This time, the Shadowhunter App has an exclusive sneak-peek to The Bane Chronicles: Runaway Queen.

Download the Shadowhunter App for: Andriod or Apple users.
Here's a snippet from the preview:
There was a smell to Paris in the summer mornings that Magnus enjoyed. This was surprising, because on summer mornings Paris smelled of cheese and that sat in in the sun all day and fish and the less desirable parts of fish. It smelled of people and all the things that people produce (this does not refer to art or culture, but to the baser things that were dumped out of windows in buckets). But these were punctuated by other odors, and the odors would shift rapidly from street to street, or building to building That heady whiff of a bakery might be followed by an unexpected flush of gardenias in a garden, which gave way to the iron-rich pong of slaughterhouse.
The Runaway Queen will be available for ebook purchase on May 21. Pre-order a copy on Amazon.com ($4.64 USD)

New Version of 'The Shadowhunter's Codex' Available October 29

We've already heard about The Shadowhunters' Codex but what makes this special edition different?
Simon Schuster tells us the special edition comes with a "beautiful slipcase with luxurious detailing that matches its historic importance. It’s as much a work of art as a training manual."

The special edition will be available October, 29 for $30.32 (USD) or $36.35(CND).

Details about the product:
Don’t miss The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, soon to be a major motion picture in theaters August 2013.
Delve into the details of all things Shadowhunter with this illustrated guide to the knowledge and lore of the Shadowhunter world.

Since the thirteenth century, the Shadowhunter’s Codex has been the one and only manual for Shadowhunters looking to brush up on their demon languages, learn proper stele use, and discover just what exactly a pyxis is. Featured in both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, this guide is a necessity for any young Nephilim on their journey to becoming a Shadowhunter. Beautifully illustrated, the Codex contains images of the famous Shadowhunter homeland of Idris, as well as depictions of demons and other Downworlders.
But this isn’t just any copy of The Shadowhunter’s Codex. It’s Clary’s copy, and as an artist herself, she’s sketched pictures of her friends and family in the book, and scrawled helpful advice in the margins. Of course, she couldn’t exactly stop Jace or Simon from adding their thoughts either. Part encyclopedia, part history, part training manual—complete with commentary from Shadowhunters who have seen it all—this beautiful guide is a perfect supplement to the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Tribute Interviews Director, Harald Zwart

Tribute got the chance to speak with the director for City of Bones, Harald Zwart. They talk about why Harald chose specifically this book to adapt, and the intricate details to the set...
What was your favorite part about filming in Toronto?
It reminded me of a European city, so after filming, there was always a great place to go and have dinner or just walk around the streets of Yorkville. I just really fell in love with Toronto as a city.
Do you believe in “monsters, nightmares and legends whispered around campfires,”—as heard in the movie?
(Laughs) That’s a great question! Well, I do now!
What made you change your mind? Was it the movie?
Yes, after exploring the idea that us humans, we are limited in our perceptions—we don’t see everything that’s around us—I do believe that there’s more between heaven and earth than what we actually have the capacity to take in.
There are so many movie adaptations of novels being released right now, why did you choose to be a part of this one?
I just really liked the tone of the book. It’s got a good blend of humor and it takes the characters seriously. I think the journey of Clary, who is kind of in a detective story, trying to figure out her own mind—I thought it was wonderfully, psychologically complex and I know that young people are so smart that they can easily be challenged by these things, but they’ll all get it.
What makes a novel fit to be turned into a movie?
I can only speak for this one, but the way Cassandra writes is very visual. Once I start reading it, all the images pop into my head and all these wonderful places that she is describing and the portal. It’s just the mood of the whole thing, just lent itself to any visual inspiration. Look at what the fans have been doing for years! It’s clear that this book has inspired young, creative fans all over the world to keep making their own movie posters, their own version of the movie trailer—so they all seem to be very visually inspired by this.

Cassandra Clare and Harald Zwart Talk Movie Adaptation at the LA Times Festival of Books

Cassandra Clare and Harald Zwart both attended the Los Angeles Times: Festival of Book this past weekend. They talk about the adaptation of City of Bone. (For a quick tweet run-down click here)
“It’s a bit of an exercise in letting go,” said Claire, of being an author and selling the movie rights. She had no expectations of being involved, and only found out about Lilly Collins being cast as Clary from Collider.com, like everyone else – but once Cassie signaled her interest in being involved, and once Harald came on board to direct, suddenly the doors were wide open and Cassie was weighing in on everything from casting to prop design. As to why the Hollywood types were willing to let her be so involved, Clare recalled one producer telling her: “Cassie, I never want you to say Harold and Robbie ruined my book. I want you to say, Harold, Robert, and I ruined my movie.”

Day 1 of 84: Final Shadowhunter Tarot Cards: Drusilla and Octavian

Cassandra Jean has created Shadowhunter Tarot Cards. Some of the cards have been switched out for others (you can view all the ones that are out here), but Cassandra Clare announced on her tumblr that the card deck has been finalized. Each day starting from today, Cassie will post a new card on her tumblr. Some of the cards we have seen before and some we haven't, but be ware, there are spoilers!

For Day 1:
Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … eighty-four? days I’ll be posting a card a day in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have.
This card corresponds to the Fool, which can be either 0 or 22 in the Tarot. We decided to do one 0 and one 22. 0 is Drusilla and Octavian Blackthorn who we picked because they symbolize uncorrupted innocence which is an aspect of the Fool card.

Cassandra Clare Talks 'Movie Adaptation for City of Bones' with CraveOnline

CraveOnline: When Hollywood started buying teen literary properties, did you bide your time and lord over this series while entertaining suitors?
Cassandra Clare: I didn’t. I was actually pretty early on the scene. I sold my books before Twilightcame out and so when we put the books out for movie studios and what not to buy the rights, YA was a pretty unknown phenomenon. People weren’t really sure what to do with it. It got bought by Unique Features and Constantin. They just really loved the story and they were on the same page with me, so I didn’t lord it over them. I didn’t wait and entertain suitors because there really wasn’t that kind of feeding frenzy back then. Now it is which is really interesting to me, but no, they’ve had the property for five years.

So did they shop it around and take it to different studios before Screen Gems? They did but Robert Kulzer, who is the producer at Constantin I’ve worked with the most, has a long term relationship with Screen Gems and Sony. They’ve done the Underworld movies together and I think he felt like they really had a handle on urban fantasy, so I think they were his first pick. Fortunately they got on board.

Do you need the movies to be strictly faithful to your books, or are you open to some interpretation?I’m open to some interpretation because I think one of the interesting things you can do with movies is, with the books you have the viewpoint of one character, Clary. So you can’t see anything as the reader that she doesn’t see. You can’t hear anything she doesn’t hear, you don’t know things she doesn’t know, but in a movie you can open out the world and you can see scenes that she wasn’t present for, and you can hear things that she doesn’t hear and know things she doesn’t know, and I think that creates some interesting experiments.

We know from the trailer they have the nightclub scene, right?Oh yeah, they definitely have the nightclub scene. I’m excited about that.

What was it like to see key scenes like that come to life?Oh, it’s very surreal because you’ve only ever imagined it and then suddenly there it is, coming to life on screen and you’re like, “Wow, somebody crawled inside my head and pulled out all this stuff and put it up on this big screen for everybody to see. It’s really incredible.

Were there certain scenes that they had to have in the movie?Yeah, there were certain scenes that I really, really wanted them to keep in the movie. The scene where Clary and Jace first talk, the marine house scene which is the romantic scene, and Magnus Bane’s party which is my favorite scene in the book. I really wanted to make sure they got that.

Are all of those scenes in the final cut?As far as I know, yes.

Lily Collins Talks With MSN: 'How The Mortal Instruments is Important to Her'

MSN interview Lily Collins at WonderCon 2013. Lily explains how The Mortal Instruments is important to her and the beautifully detailed sets for the movie.
MSN Movies: I understand that doing "The Mortal Instruments" has been a very personal project for you.
Lily Collins: It is. It's really personal for me. I was a huge fan of the books before I was cast. I looked up to Clary as a fellow reader, and I associate a lot of similar qualities with her because I'm really super close with my mom. And Clary goes on this whole journey to get her mom back, and it's a personal quest for her as she's growing up in search of finding her mom. I completely would act the same way that Clary does if I were in that situation. So I felt very close to the project.
Two-part question: What sets this apart from the other young adult adaptations that have been coming out, and how do you get people beyond that core readership into the film? What does it have for them?
What's different, I think, is that our story involves reality and a fantasy world married together. And it's not just this is happening when it's fantasy and there's magic involved and then this is when she's at school. It's like there are two worlds intertwined throughout the entire movie. And the way that we've filmed it, you forget which world you're in because it just seems so normal. Like the magic stuff just feels obvious to you during the film, so it's not like you're taken out of a reality at any point.

Lily Collins Talks About Getting the Role of Clary With Crave Online

Crave Online Canada interviews Lily Collins. Lily talks about auditioning for Bella from Twilight and reading the rest of The Mortal Instruments books.
Of course, and by the time Mortal Instruments came along, you’re an established actor. Did they come to you?Screen Gems did approach me. It was a lot of the same team that had worked on Priest and we had really close relationships and they knew that I was a really big fan of the series. So I was very honored when I got the potential to play a character that I’ve grown up loving.
