"I actually saw a lot of similarities between Clary and I," Lily said. "She's a go-getter. She's feisty. She fights for what she believes in, and I really associate a lot of her qualities with mine, but I also wanted to bring this realness to her, like she was just the girl next door, because I didn't want her to be this caricature of a fan-favorite heroine in a book. I wanted her to be someone you could be friends with next door."
Not an easy task, considering Clary is actually a descendant of a long line of demon-destroying Nephilim known as Shadowhunters. (I don't know about you, but the only super-human ability my childhood neighbor had was flying across the Slip 'n Slide really fast.) So how did Lily accomplish this feat?
"[By] incorporating a bit more humor into some of the situations with [Clary] and the boys—just not making her a constant victim," she explained. "Because I think when you're going through so many whats and whys in the span of every five minutes, those reactions could become really similar, and it becomes more of this, 'Oh, poor me. I'm in this situation.' When she's really like, 'Another problem? Solved! Another problem? Let's go!' So it's that really tenacious attitude I tried to incorporate more."
What was that like wearing that outfit, first of all?Well, it’s funny because in the series, I say to Isabelle when she’s giving me this makeover, like, “This is a top,” and she’s like, “It’s a dress.” So already you know that it’s like some crazy skimpy little number, and, so, we did a lot of the fight sequences where I’m in this outfit. And I have like thigh-high leather boots with this mini bandage dress. You can imagine doing stunts, falling on the floor… All that stuff is quite awkward when you have very minimal attire on. But we had one version, apparently, that was longer – but it was like an inch longer – for stunts. It really was not much longer. But everyone kind of acknowledged the fact that it’s hard to move in, so the stunts were somewhat coordinated around the dress in some situations. But it was worth wearing because, you know, it just shows Clary’s transformation from this kind of tomboyish girl to a woman, and then thrust into this situation with six-inch heels, boots, and a little leather dress. It’s kind of… awkward.
What is one thing you admire about your character?I admire how tenacious she is. She never gives up, even though she’s put in these situations that no normal teenager would ever go through. Not only is she going through kind of, you know, the question of who she likes, who she doesn’t like – normal girl stuff – she’s also conquering these questions of, you know, how am I going to save my mom from all evil? And she’s able to get through it, and she doesn’t give up.
Can you tell us a bit about the training you did for the movie? It was insane training. I did physical fitness training three months prior to starting and then every day we would train, so even if that meant getting up literally at like 4:30 or 5:00 in the morning before set we’d go train,
What has your contact with author Cassandra Clare been like?Check out the full interview over at EntertainmentWeekly (page 2).
I didn’t meet with her before I was cast. I spoke with her on the phone a few times during the casting process but I met her for the first time the weekend right before we started shooting, when she came out to Toronto for the table read. We all went out to dinner with her. It was so crazy to be at the table with her, the creator of these stories. The ability to pick her brain about things, and hear her opinions and ideas and just for her to be at the table read and give her two cents on the script. To have her involvement and enthusiasm in the project was unparallelled. I just wanted her to revel in her books being made into movies! I wanted her to come on set and I wanted to see her reaction to the scripts and all this kind of stuff. It was really amazing to have her there and hear her feedback.
Fans are quite pumped about seeing Jace on the big screen. What do you like about his performance?
I love that Jamie plays Jace in this way – he’s got this amazing balance between being this cocky and sarcastic guy, which is what we love about Jace, and then all of sudden he can turn and be incredibly vulnerable and emotional and sensitive. And Jamie’s got these two sides to him – I think it takes an incredible actor to be able to want to show a vulnerable side, because I think so many actors just want to be this masculine character. Jamie can be doing amazing fight choreography and flips and sword fighting, and the next second he can be getting emotional and cry. … I’ve said from day one [when Jamie walked in], that was it. He had this amazing playful energy that is so collaborative. I cannot wait for people to see him as Jace because it is Jace come to life. I’m really proud of him.
It's impossible to compare something to what was first known as the first franchise to really hit big and that's Twilight. You know, it was it's own entity itself and it's ok to hope to have such a big fanbase like that but, I think when it comes to comparing and contrasting, it's so different. I mean, it's the world where there's angels and demons and it's a totally different universe than any other film that I've seen.Watch it on USA today.
“They have opinions for everything and I love them for it,” Clare said. “I love that they’re so excited.
I was flooded with emails that were either, ‘I want to be in the movie’ or ‘So and so should be in the movie.’”
Collider: How did you come to this project? Did you know anything about the book series, or did you just read the script and respond to it?
JAMIE CAMPBELL BOWER: I was in Los Angeles for pilot season and the script had been in development for awhile. They sent me through just the sides, actually, for an audition. I responded really well to the sides, and I really, really liked it. It was a real last-minute thing. I was due to leave the day after, and I did leave the day after. And then, I got a call-back for a screen test here, so upon getting the call-back for the test, I read the book. I read book 1 and 2, actually. I read book 1 quite fully, and then just went through book 2. And then, I did the test and got the role. That’s how I came to be involved in the madness.
"It’s really intriguing and it’s really frightening too. There’s nothing like a movie that focuses this big lens onto your work that hasn’t been there before," Clare said.Watch the video here.
She admitted her fans had their opinions about who should play who, but she wouldn’t have it any other way as Mortal Instruments fans are as passionate as they come. “They have opinions for everything and I love them for it,” Clare said. “I love that they’re so excited. I was flooded with emails that were either, ‘I want to be in the movie’ or ‘So and so should be in the movie.’”
Meanwhile, Collins lets us in on her thoughts on the most memorable moment for her as a part of this rapidly becoming-iconic series. She immediately credits the filmmakers for how she felt like she walked onto the pages of the book when she arrived on the set. "I love how the art department made all the sets feel true to the book,” Collins said.
She also appreciated the bonding with her castmates and filmmakers. “All of us really became one in making this movie.”
After her work in Mirror Mirror and now her starring role in this film, teased in the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trailer, it is easy to see the passion the actress has for the genre. “I’ve always loved fantasy films. I love how they take me away to somewhere else. It’s not just fantasy that’s the big appeal with these movies -- it’s that they have heart.”
We also caught up with star Kevin Zegers, who portrays Alec Lightwood, as he explores what it was about this Mortal Instruments world that most compelled him.
"The biggest appeal was the character. I love this guy for whatever reason,” Zegers said. As soon as "action" was called, he immediately knew the book's secret to success. “Once we started shooting the movie, the world is great and it’s easy to see why the fans are crazy about it.”
Jamie Campbell Bower, who is fan favorite Jace Wayland, was just a little nervous about tackling a project that is so enormous in the world of popular culture. “I was terrified. There’s always a responsibility, even if it isn’t an adaptation to a popular book,” Bower said. “It’s a scary prospect, big time.”
We asked Zegers if his character's sexuality is addressed in the first film, and he responded:Watch the full interview over at i09
You know, it's not something that's really addressed totally. There's kind of the subtext of people assuming that [Alec] is. But it's not something that we really focused on in the first movie, just because theres so many traits that he has. It wasn't a focus, really.
But he says that they still "played around" with the idea that Alec has feelings for Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), and that there's a hint of a love triangle between Alec, Jace and Clary (Lily Collins). "It's definitely in there," says Zegers. "We didn't hit anything straight on the nose. It doesn't have to be. But there's a lot of subtle things that go on between the three of us, that the audience can make up their own mind about."
As for whether we'll get to see Alec get a love interest of his own if there are sequels, Zegers says: "Of course. It's a huge part of the progression of the character. So I hope so. It's what the fans seem to love about the character, is his love story." So if they actually make more movies, he definitely hopes they explore that aspect.
They screened the brand new trailer for the film before taking questions from the audience. Clare said that the film, which she hasn't seen in its entirety, is as close to the spirit of the book as possible without being 10 hours long. She recalled the great access she was given, from hours of conversations with the casting director to visits to the set and even being able to make a cameo in the movie. The shadowhunters at WonderCon 2013 got a first look at the theatrical trailer to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Although most of us couldn't be there, we have picture from the ones who did make it!
Collins said they needed to make Clary accessible to the audience, someone who could be your friend amidst all these crazy situations. Bower said his character will be both vulnerable and snarky. All of the panelists said (surprise!) how much they enjoyed working on the film and with each other.
“It ends, and you have to watch it again because there’s so much packed into the trailer. The first time I watched it, I asked to watch it three other times just ‘cause it’s so much that happens, it’s like a whirlwind.”
“As well as hopefully pleasing the fans of the series, I think we're going to invite new people in and make them obsessed with the story as well,” Collins says. “I couldn't be prouder of the project. I'm so excited for people to see it. I really think Harald [Zwart, the director] did an amazing job of taking what could've been a CGI-heavy, action-packed film and really made it about heart and character and emotion. Special effects are just the icing on top.”

Hey guys it’s Lily. I’m so excited to tell you that we’re going to be in Anaheim California for this year’s Wondercon where you will get an exclusive sneak peek of The Mortal Instruments and you’ll get to see our new trailer and poster. I hope to see you there.Only a limited amount of people can make it to WonderCon, but Cassie assures us that there will be a new theatrical trailer and a new poster by the end of March.
So 1) yes, Lily, Jamie, Harald, me, and perhaps others :) will be at Wondercon in Anaheim this year, doing a panel, answering questions, and most of all — debuting the new theatrical trailer and the new poster that will go up in theaters!
2) While it would be absolutely awesome if you could attend Wondercon to see us, if you don’t: this is still very good news since what it means is that there will be a new theatrical trailer and a new poster ready to go out into the world at the end of March. Wondercon is just a way of saying “THESE ARE READY TO GO!” (And trust me when I find out exactly when our Wondercon panel is and which movie the trailer will be attached to, I will post about it RIGHT HERE. I have been asking myself almost every day.)
Lily Collins is also navigating between independent movies and more commercial fare. This summer will see the release of “Stuck in Love,” co-starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly, and “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” in which she has the lead role.Check out the whole article over at WWD.com
“[It’s] based on a series on books, kind of like ‘The Hunger Games’ or ‘Twilight,’ so hopefully becoming like a new franchise,” said Collins, who as a result of intensive training boasted flexed thighs under her cute lampshade skirt. “I love dressing up girly and then I love kicking butt, you know?”
I also have some exciting information for those coming to the LA signing: we’re going to have a special guest — Lily Collins. For more information about the Clockwork Princess tour visit Cassie's website.
She’ll be at the store to take pictures with fans and also to answer questions about playing Clary in the film.
And who knows? Maybe some other cast members will pop by too. ;)
Lily is incredibly sweet and I’m so glad she’ll be there!
