Constantin Films Postponing THE MORTAL INSTRMENTS: CITY OF ASHES Filming

The principal photography for The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes was set to shoot in Toronto Monday, September, 23, however after a soft opening weekend, Constantin Films will "analyze the results to date and reposition the franchise in order to maximize the results for future installments.”

Martin Moskowicz adds
Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of CITY OF ASHES was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place. THE
MORTAL INSTRUMENTS series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a bestselling book series. While taking Cassandra Claire’s vision to the screen we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.
Isn't Martin Moskowicz and the whole team the best? I guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer, but I'm sure a better movie will be worth the wait.
Hopefully we will get another Mortal Instruments movie, so keep on tweeting #WeNeedCityOfAshes

Pictures: Closeup Shots of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS' Supernatural Characters + Talk About The Make-up

Silent Brother Practical Make-up
Make-Up Artist Magazine features the supernatural characters make-up in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. They show how the practical make-up is rooted from the concept design.
The film’s physical creatures were built by make-up effects veteran Paul Jones (Silent Hill, Defiance), with designs contributed by concept artist Martin Mercer. Unlike other genre projects, where the monsters have a much more obvious presence, the challenge on this film was to create a range of supernatural characters that may not be as obvious at first. “There’s a great scene where Clary goes to Magnus Bane’s house [where there’s] a party,” explains Jones, “and I would say about 70 percent of the guests are human and the other 30 percent are human-ish, so they all have something slightly off about them.
“One guy has a golden face with African tribal scars on his face, but his face is a luminescent gold, while another girl has cat eyes that you don’t really notice at first until she opens her eyes wide at the camera, so in terms of our prosthetics, everything was scaled right down to be very subtle. We found people that were interesting already and basically enhanced their natural features, rather than taking somebody average or attractive and turning them into a monster.”
Jones worked directly with Mercer to create the creatures. “Martin is very fast,” Jones notes, “so I was able to run the shop but not have to sit down at my laptop and design for a day. Martin would come to me and I would act like an art director and say, ‘OK, that wrinkle is great—make it a bit longer and bring the cheekbones out more, darken down this part of the rune, make the teeth a little longer.’
Silent Brother Concept Design

“Four or five hours later the design would be done and get sent off to production designer François SĂ©guin, and from a practical point of view, I wouldn’t have any problem building anything in the design. When you are given a design by somebody else, it can be tricky sometimes, because they don’t understand what we do or the limitations we have from a prosthetic point of view. Because I understood the characters in this world and where they lived, we were able to simply carry on with what we were doing.”

Godfrey Gao and Kevin Zegers Agree That "There Will Definitely Be More Malec in the CITY OF ASHES Movie"

While Godfrey Gao, and Kevin Zegers were in Mexico City for The Mortal Instruments premiere, they answered a few fan questions from Revista CinePREMIERE. One of the questions concern some talk about Magnus, Alec and their relationship in the next movie -City of Ashes:

"Constantin is proceeding with plans to begin shooting CITY OF ASHES" Says Martin Moskowicz

Although City of Ashes has been scheduled to start this September, 23, a lot of fans were still afraid that there would be no City of Ashes movie due to the "soft" opening of just over $14 million for City of Bones. However, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that:
Despite the soft U.S. start, Moszkowicz said the reaction from the book's fan base has been "very positive." And he said that Constantin is proceeding with plans to begin shooting a sequel, Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, in Toronto this fall.
Also, keep in mind, there will be a international roll-out for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Moszkowicz said it was still too early to make a prognosis forMortal Instrument's global box office revenue. But Constantin has proven before that it can successfully use international markets to recoup a shortfall in the U.S. Paul WS Anderson's The Three Musketeers (2011), a Constantin production, earned a disappointing $20 million in its U.S. release through Summit Entertainment, but went on to gross some $150 million worldwide.
Martin Moskowicz also states:
Martin Moszkowicz, head of film and TV at Constantin and an executive producer on Mortal Instruments, blamed the weak early U.S. figures on "a strongly competitive environment," which included a pair of similarly-skewing genre pics in Lionsgate's horror movie You're Next and Edgar Wright's sci-fi action-comedy The World's End. He also cited strong holdovers The Butler and We're the Millers. Sony's Screen Gems picked up the film for the U.S.

MORTAL INSTRUMENTS Stars on JustJared's Spotlight of the Week

As you know, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones came out this week (make sure you see it this weekend!), in honour of that, JustJared has made Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Godfrey Gao, and Kevin Zegers their star spotlight this week.

Lily Collins' Photoshoot

TMICanada's Lily Collins JustJared 13 album on Photobucket
Just Jared: What is your favorite prop from the set?
Lily Collins: The witch light.
JJ: Did you steal it?
LC: I couldn’t, I wasn’t allowed.
JJ: Did you steal anything from set?
LC: I stole my blue leather jacket with all the rips in it. And my Doc Martens.
JJ: What was the craziest stunt that you did?
LC: Ooh! Well, pretty much running around at three or four in the morning with my heels on was enough. But I ran, I had to climb up this fire escape and launch myself off of it, after the vampire lets go of my foot, and I did it in my six inch boots and my mini dress, so I was trying not to show any skin while launching myself onto Jamie, which was interesting.

Mortal Instruments Men (Godfrey Gao, Jamie Campbell Bower + Kevin Zegers') Photoshoot

TMICanada's MORTAL INSTRUMENTS Men JustJared album on Photobucket
Just Jared: Do you have a favorite prop from the set of Mortals?
Jamie Campbell Bower: My ring.
JJ: That you stole?
JCB: I didn’t steal it. I asked if I could have it.
JJ: What’s so special about it?
JCB: It’s a huge point when Valentine turns it around. Also, it was probably the smallest thing that I could take. (laughs)
Just Jared: What was your favorite prop from set?
Kevin Zegers: I have these things that are called “tonfas”, which are like a police’s night sticks but they have blades on the end of them.
JJ: Did you take them from set?
KZ: I didn’t. They wouldn’t let me take them.
JJ: Did you take anything?
KZ: They gave me this little thing that has this metal like, what do you call it? Anyway, it’s like this metal dust that’s inside this little jar. So they gave me that.
Just Jared: Do you have a favorite prop from set?
Godfrey Gao: My costume, which I thought was pretty cool. I had two costumes actually. One of them was just a velvet blazer with a lot of crazy designs. It looks silky, but also velvet, and every time you move, it lights up. It’s pretty cool. The bottom, I was wearing my underwear, (laughs), so that was pretty interesting for me. My prop, maybe the towel I had, just to wrap around my legs. I needed that because it was really cold. So that was a warm blanket that I had. Actually, the warlock outfit was pretty cool too. It was like full black, kind of like a demon, a whole suit with a pullover and a black, leather corset around my waist. That was a pretty cool outfit, and I wish I would have used that for maybe my next Halloween costume or something.
JJ: Did you do any crazy stunt work in those costumes?
GG: No, I don’t have any stunt scenes, but hopefully there will be more in the next movie. This movie was just an introduction to the character, I have a few scenes in this movie and Magnus Bane is a popular fan favorite character and it develops into the second and third film as well. It’s just like the books.

Find out What Element Makes THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS the Next Big Thing

Breitbart has a great article talking about how The Mortal Instruments captures the essential tween elements.
Built-in name recognition? Author Cassandra Clare has 12 million books in print domestically, including the first five in the Mortal Instruments series (the sixth book hits stores next year).
Tween-friendly content? The story boasts a love triangle brimming with angst along with a main character who learns disturbing things about her family tree.
Rising stars? Lily Collins, daughter of rocker Phil Collins, is making waves with movies likeMirror, Mirror and The Blind Side on her resume. Co-star Jamie Campbell Bower formerly appeared in the Twilight franchise and dated Collins for a spell--shades of the Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson real-life romance.
Nothing is preordained in Hollywood, but The Mortal Instruments has the proverbial deck stacked in its favor. It's no accident than a second film in the budding franchise is already slated for a 2014 production.
Go check out the rest of the article at Breitbart.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS Cast Talk About CITY OF ASHES

Toronto Star representatives were at the Toronto Mortal Instruments premiere last Thursday and they got a chance to speak to Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan and Kat Kleiner, head of international marketing and publicity for Constantin Film. The cast and crew talk about filming the sequel, City of Ashes:
“It’s wicked that we’re green-lit for movie two. Green-lighting any sequel is a gamble. But we have made a great film and it’s wicked that we get to go back and make possibly another great film,” said Jamie Campbell Bower“It’s very rare that a sequel will go into (pre-)production when the first film is not even out yet. It’s given us a huge boost of confidence,” added Lily Collins
“We are confident in the strength of this franchise and fans are extremely loyal, committed and supportive. We are excited about the opening of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and look forward to the sequel . . . which begins filming next month in Toronto. We are knee-deep in prep,” said Kat Kleiner

2 Non-spoiler Reviews of 'THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES' Movie

We were so lucky to get 2 TMICanada bloggers at The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Toronto premiere on Thursday night. So, here we are going to feature two opinions on The Mortal Instruments movie.

Celine's Review

This year, out of all the book adaptions I've watch (or tried to watch), I would have to say The Mortal Instruments is the best one. So many fans have been worried about The Mortal Instruments movie becoming another box-office miss like The Host, Beautiful Creatures, and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. After watching the movie, I genuinely believe The Mortal Instruments will become the next big franchise. And in the highly unlikely chance that it will not, I'm sure the fans of the series will enjoy the movie.

Unfortunately if you are a huge Godfrey Gao fan, it did sound like they dubbed (or edited) his voice so that there was no accent in his English. If you followed the pictures and news during the filming of The Mortal Instruments or if you live in the GTA, you can tell that the streets are not in New York. In addition, a BMO showed up in one of the shots, but hey, who cares?

After you watch the movie, you should watch the behind the scenes videos because you will appreciate the stunts the actors did (own their own) even more. When Lily Collins said this movie was a mix of action, comedy, love and just about everything, she was telling the truth. Has some hilarious lines! The comedy from the book does present itself throughout the movie. After watching the movie once, I want to go and watch it again in IMAX so that there is more Mortal Instruments on the big screen!

Olivia's Review

I should start off by saying that this movie was well worth the 5 year wait from when I first started reading these books. Harald Zwart and the whole TMI team did an awesome job in making this book into a great movie.
There are 3 things that I learned while watching this movie:
  1. Jamie is Jace!! If after watching this movie you still think that someone could play the character of Jace better than Jamie Campbell Bower, I will argue you to the death. He brought all of those components of everyone’s favourite character to life, being that sarcastic teenager with his hidden agony from his past. So from us here at TMI Canada, GREAT JOB JAMIE!
  2. This is, hands down, the best book-to-movie adaptation I have seen in a very long time. Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Host, Percy Jackson—I’ve seen and read them all, and none of them come even close  to The Mortal Instruments in terms of books-to-movies. The best thing about this movie was that they made very little changes to the plot of the movie from the book—everything was spot on and correct. There was one scene that they did change for the purpose of having the scene run on for too long, but other than that, the movie and the book were completely similar.
  3. We have the greatest fandom in the world. The atmosphere in the theatre was amazing! These shadowhunters were very passionate about this film and book series, and it was great being in a room where everybody had the same reaction to everything (WARNING: be prepared for massive screams when the Clace kiss comes on screen). Our fans are awesome!
Of course, there was the downside of having Godfrey’s voice dubbed over, but don’t worry…you get over  hat very quickly once you see him in action. On that note, all the actors did an awesome job portraying these characters from this awesome book. Lily, Jamie, Kevin, Jemima, Robbie…congratulations on doing such a fantastic job! This movie has made me so excited for City of Ashes…I just can’t contain myself.
